Photography is an art form that uses the familiar mechanical device known the world-over as the camera to capture an image. Many of you probably have one in your pocket right now. But did you know you can create a picture with words? When you look at a physical photograph, you transfer the image from a piece of photographic paper, or a computer or cell phone screen, to your "mind's eye." Similarly, when we read words that evoke an image, the image moves from the author's imagination into yours.This lesson will invite you to explore the power of the element of literature writers call imagery. We'll practice using words that appeal to the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. We'll use the skills we developed in practicing with imagery to create a haiku. Given the simplicity of haiku's its form, this lesson is suitable for anyone - even students who have never written a poem before. We'll walk you through the process from start to finish.
